Hand injuries remain one of the most common workplace incidents, and most of them involve either no glove or the wrong glove. Selection comes down to the dominant hazard, the dexterity the task requires, and how long the glove needs to last.
Identify the dominant hazard
Glove families are built around different risks:
- General handling — coated knit or leather gloves for grip, abrasion and minor scrapes.
- Cut risk — engineered yarn gloves rated for cut resistance, for sheet metal, glass and blade work.
- Heat and welding — leather gauntlets and heat-resistant liners for hot surfaces, sparks and spatter.
- Chemical handling — nitrile, neoprene or PVC gloves selected against the specific chemical and contact time.
- Vibration — anti-vibration gloves for extended use of breakers and grinders.
Do not trade away dexterity
A glove too bulky for the task gets removed at the worst moment. For assembly, inspection and fine work, choose a thinner coated glove with a higher rating rather than a heavy leather one; for material handling and demolition, prioritise abrasion resistance and cuff length.
Cuff length matters more than buyers expect: a longer cuff or gauntlet protects the forearm during overhead work, welding and chemical decanting.
Chemical gloves need specific matching
Chemical resistance is chemical-specific. A glove that resists one solvent may degrade rapidly in another, so specify the actual substances, concentration and expected contact time when ordering. Treat chemical gloves as time-limited during use and replace them after contamination rather than washing and reissuing.
Sizing, stock levels and cost per use
Stock at least three sizes for a mixed workforce; gloves that are too large reduce grip and too small cause fatigue. Compare options on cost per use rather than unit price — a slightly more expensive glove that lasts three times longer is cheaper, and it reduces the temptation to keep working with a torn one.
