PPE Requirements for Construction Companies in Nigeria

Baseline site issue

Everyone crossing the site boundary, including visitors and clients, normally needs:

• Safety helmet with chin strap.
• Safety boots with toe and midsole protection.
• High visibility vest or jacket.
• Basic eye protection for site walking and general tasks.

Trade-specific additions

Layer the following on top of the baseline, by trade and activity:

• Concrete and blockwork — chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, dust masks.
• Steel fixing and erection — cut-resistant gloves, unpeaked helmets, fall protection.
• Welding and fabrication — welding helmet or shield, gauntlets, leather apron and sleeves.
• Grinding and cutting — face shield, hearing protection, respiratory protection.
• Scaffolding and roofing — full-body harness, shock-absorbing lanyard, anchorage connectors.
• Painting and coatings — respirator with the correct cartridge, disposable coveralls.

Quantities, storage and replacement

Plan issue against peak headcount per phase, not average, and hold a buffer for new starters, losses and damage. Store PPE in a lockable, dry area with a simple issue register; equipment that is technically on site but locked in an unattended container is not available equipment.

Consumables — gloves, dust masks, ear plugs, disposable coveralls — need a routine reorder point. Running out mid-phase is the most common reason PPE rules get informally suspended.

Enforcement is part of procurement

Induct every worker on what is required where, put mandatory PPE signage at entry points and hazard zones, and make supervisors responsible for daily visual checks. Where compliance is poor, review comfort and availability before assuming attitude: heat, fit and slow replacement explain most of it.
